When nothing yields fruit, the couple are advised to participate in the festivities of a local temple: for one night the norms of society are relaxed, all men are deemed gods and women desiring children are permitted to have sex with strangers. ![]() Twelve years of childlessness are accompanied by thousands of temple visits, prayers, offerings. Seen by society as a “barren” woman, Ponna is insulted and excluded by the community, while Kali is goaded to take a second wife. Kali treats her with utmost affection, and has a primal, reflexive desire for her that cannot quite qualify as love. Ponna is a doting, obedient, subservient wife, the kind who comes running at a snap of her husband’s fingers, and who only exists in the Tamil male imagination. ![]() The novel, set in 1940s Tamil Nadu, is the story of Ponna and Kali, a farming couple whose happiness is marred by their inability to have a child. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments The 4th Branch by J. He is in no way trying to engage a 10 year old in a sexual relationship. The pursuit of the 10-yr-old girl by a 17-yr-old boy should be into the context of the story. The story is a bit slow in the beginning, but it's worth pushing through.įinal comment: I disagree with the pedophile comments made by some people. I don't know if the characters are particularly good role models, but Tuck and Mae do have an interesting perspective that only their situation could create and they have good intentions. It's actually quite a sweet story about a series of unfortunate events. This is a great little story with a realistic look at what it would be like to live forever, something many ignorantly desire. ![]() ![]() Lovecraft cited this book as an influence, and it's the direct source of Hastur's name.
